Oman installs solar panels in 22 schools for reducing carbon footprints and using clean energy. The solar panels were installed by Shell Oman under its “Gift to the Nation” initiative as part of its “Solar into Schools” project

Shell Oman partnered with local small and medium enterprises and the Ministry of Education for installing solar panels in 22 public schools in the coming 5 years. The company will also install solar PV systems in 3 more schools between 2021-2023

The total capacity of the solar plants installed was 27 MWs. The project helped in reducing 2,000 tonnes of carbon emissions every year. Each solar PV plant will generate 150 MWh per year

The Ministry of Education seeks to optimize the use of renewable energy sources and reduce the cost of electricity at the Ministry’s buildings by increasing the utilization of renewable energy through cutting-edge technologies in this space,” said Majid Al Bahri, the Undersecretary for Administrative and Financial Affairs at the Ministry of Education

The Solar into Schools project helps lower the electricity bills through the power generated by PV panels, thus saving schools the high cost of grid power, increasing awareness of solar energy through the training package developed from the curriculum, and creating viable business opportunities for SME entrepreneur

Dr. Abdullah bin Khamis Ambusaidi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Education, said, “I would like to extend our thanks and recognition to Shell Oman for its continuous and fruitful cooperation with the Ministry of Education in consolidating students’ awareness of clean energy and its importance in our future lives, by adopting two major projects in this area

The first project is Solar into Schools, where solar PV systems have been installed in 22 public schools across the Sultanate over the past five years, and the first solar PV systems have been piloted in Oman. The project focused on educating generations about the importance of clean energy solutions

The second one is the NXplorers educational programme, which was also implemented in the 22 schools, through which Shell aims to enhance students’ scientific knowledge and skills and practically demonstrate that knowledge through direct interaction with solar PV systems in their schools. We in the Ministry of Education commend this cooperation and hope to continue to cooperate with Shell to take scientific projects to a better and broader horizon

Shell Oman helped in the growth and development of renewable energy with the installation of solar panels in schools

Walid Hadi, vice president and board chairman for Shell Oman, said, “Initiatives like these are a part of our commitment towards supporting the Sultanate’s energy transition, while also contributing to the national economic diversification goals outlined in Oman Vision 2040

While the Solar into Schools project harnessed Oman’s potential for solar energy development and deployment, it also played an important role in raising awareness of the benefits of using low-carbon energy sources amongst the community, boosting interest amongst the Omani youth in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) educational, streams and inspiring them to take up entrepreneurial renewable energy roles in the future
